In two especially tight November elections, working closely with neighboring local associations, the 5,000-member Seattle King County Association of REALTORS® pushed the campaigns of two REALTOR® Champions over the top. With a $15,000 Smart Growth Grant from NAR, the 9,500-member board sponsored a multi-day gathering of community stakeholders and national thought leaders to establish a master plan for the South Central Waterfront area, which is very near the state capitol. In addition to helping create a long-range plan to make the space both useful and beautiful, ABR’s relationship with key city departments has been strengthened immeasurably.

The Rogue Valley Association of REALTORS® in southwestern Oregon had already raised more than $100,000 for homebuyer-assistance grants. Now it needed a way to get the word out. Radio was the answer! An NAR Housing Opportunity Grant enabled the 1,000-member association to sponsor a popular local radio show and tell listeners about area housing opportunities—many of them provided by the charitable giving of their own members.

With the help of a Housing Opportunity Grant, the 64-member Hopkinsville Christian & Todd County Association of REALTORS® hosted a fun-filled Military Appreciation Picnic to showcase the housing opportunities in their small town.

The REALTORS® of Nevada, one of the states hardest hit by the foreclosure crisis, joined the states of Alabama, Maryland and Louisiana in amending their state constitutions to ban the use of eminent domain to seize underwater mortgages. The Nevada Association’s success on this issue at the state level will prevent this infringement of property rights from coming up in local governments throughout the state, which is very costly to fight.

When a seat opened up on the San Jose, CA City Council last January, the 5,000-member Santa Clara County Association of REALTORS® saw an opportunity to elect a candidate who would stand up for their issues. This was especially important with a number of significant property-rights issues looming on the horizon. With an Independent Expenditure grant from NAR and political action funds of their own, they helped their candidate win a decisive victory in the June election.
