When the city of Allentown, PA decided that they wanted to take a more proactive approach to fight blighted properties, their work began with a proposal to address vacant properties. The thinking being that if they could identify and prevent vacant properties to begin with, they could stem the tide on blighted properties.
REALTORS® in Providence, Rhode Island led a successful campaign against a threatened rent control ordinance that would have shifted a multi-million-dollar tax burden to local homeowners and ultimately suppressed the solution to the region’s severe housing shortage: the production of additional housing. An Issues Mobilization Grant from the REALTOR® Party helped secure the needed votes from the City Council.
With support from a REALTOR® Party Rural Outreach Grant, the Permian Basin Board of Realtors® drew over 75 members to Midland, Texas for a Water Summit: a free educational event covering the ins-and-outs of the region’s water challenges. Elected officials, utility district officials, public works staff, lobbyists and other experts addressed matters including availability, regulations, and how it all affects real estate.
