An economic study commissioned by the Greater Portland Board of REALTORS® revealed that new rent control measures have had the unintended impact of devaluing multi-family apartment buildings, which has shifted the tax burden to single-family homeowners. Rolling out the study was the first step in a campaign to educate the voting public before the issue of rent control returns for the City Council’s consideration in January 2027.
Building on a 2020 Housing Study and a Transforming Neighborhoods assessment in 2023, the Greater Lakes Association of REALTORS® recently hosted a housing summit calculated to propel the research and information into action, giving Minnesota communities what they need to develop practical, locally driven housing solutions. A Housing Opportunity Grant from the REALTOR Party helped make it possible.
By spurring just a few concerned members to contact lawmakers with strong and well-reasoned objections, the Navarre Area Board of REALTORS® was able to put a pause on a resolution to reclassify STRs as commercial property for fire assessment purposes. This would mean much higher fees for most of the affected properties, and the measure threatened not only individual homeowners, but the area’s economy, which heavily relies on tourism.
