Homeownership Advocates: That’s Who We R

Hopefully by now you’ve seen our consumer ad campaign – That’s Who We R. The campaign has been a success that with the 2019 REALTORS® Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo next week, we have tied our Hill Visit messages to Congress directly to the campaign – That’s Who We R – featuring both commercial and residential real estate. Why? Well with more than 100 new members serving in Congress, thousands of new Hill staffers, this is the perfect opportunity to reintroduce REALTORS® to the 116th Congress. REALTORS® will remind Congress of the value they bring to their communities, discussing the impact of real estate on the economy, consumers, and the vital role homeownership plays in building generational wealth for consumers.

We have an important story, namely:

  1. Who We Are and Why We Care
REALTORS® adhere to the code of ethics, and 70% actively volunteer in their communities.
  1. How Real Estate Benefits Consumers and the Economy
Real estate accounts for one-fifth of the gross domestic product, and commercial real estate supported 8.3 million American jobs in 2018.
  1. What We Care About
NAR is following range of issues before Congress. For example, the National Flood Insurance Program needs to be extended by May 31, and Opportunity Zone tax incentives, which we are working to implement.

If you haven’t already, watch the recording of the yesterday’s town hall featuring Shannon McGahn, senior vice president of government affairs, and Tracy Kasper, vice president of advocacy.

April Highlights Fair Housing and Tax Day

April is Fair Housing Month. As stewards of the right to own, use, and transfer private property, REALTORS® understand that fair housing protects the real estate industry and our businesses. We depend on a free, open market that embraces equal opportunity. In short, fair housing makes us stronger. This year, we will commemorate this important and historic milestone by highlighting four key issue areas that will set the tone for the future of fair housing.

On March 13, 2019, Rep. David Cicillini (D-PA) introduced HR 5, the Equality Act, in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Equality Act would amend the Fair Housing Act to provide protections for LGBTQ people in key areas of life, such as housing, employment, credit, public accommodations, and voting rights, and is aligned to NAR’s Code of Ethics. As we monitor this bill through the legislative process, we will continue to express our support. If the bill passes, we will work to address our policy issues as any regulations implementing it are developed.

We’ll also continue to work with and support our multicultural partners — the National Association for Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP), the Asian Real Estate Association of America (AREAA), and the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) — to address immigration housing rights, improving language access to financial materials, and gaps in African-American homeownership.

Don’t forget there are only four days until Tax Day! This is the first filing season that the impact of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will be seen as you are preparing your tax returns. If you still haven’t filed, we encourage you to review What REALTORS® Need to Know About the New Tax Law. There you’ll find helpful videos and other resources available to you. And as always, consult a tax professional if you have more detailed questions.

Preparation, Partnership, & Participation

bobGoldberg_sm.jpge_mendenhall.jpgAll the hard work we’ve done this year to increase our influence in an uncertain legislative, regulatory, and political environment has highlighted three key ingredients for success: Preparation, Partnership, and Participation. Throughout September, we are reminded of how these play out in our advocacy outreach efforts.

Preparation

As REALTORS®, we understand the importance for being prepared. Not only are we celebrating REALTOR® Safety Month, but we’ve partnered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to raise awareness of National Preparedness Month. Disasters are never planned, but we can help our clients, our communities, and ourselves by raising awareness about disaster risks and the simple, proactive steps everyone can take to be better prepared. The resources offered from House Logic and Homeownership Matters can build a culture of preparedness and ready the nation for catastrophic disasters.

Partnerships

It’s also a busy time in Washington, D.C. This week nearly 10,000 people are in town attending the Congressional Black Caucus’ Annual Legislative Conference (ALC). This year’s ALC theme, “The Dream Still Demands,” focuses on the influence and legacy of civil and social movements over the last 50 years moments, while uplifting present-day champions in the fight for racial equality, justice, and freedom. The National Association of Real Estate Brokers hosted a special session, “A 50-Year Journey: The Fair Housing Act to the Current State of Housing in Black America.” In addition to sponsoring a reception, our Federal Political Coordinators, who are attending this five-day conference will have the opportunity to delve into important conversations with industry leaders from across the globe on housing, environmental, business-related topics.

Participation

We say this time and time again because it’s true: our political strength comes from you! When 1.3 million REALTORS® let elected officials know and understand our position on public policy issues, we are successful. We’ve seen this on tax reform, extending the National Flood Insurance Program, and many other issues at the state and local levels. With Election Day only 54 days away, we are asking REALTORS® to make a commitment to vote on November 6. Approximately 15% of membership, or 195,000 REALTORS®, are not registered to vote. National Voter Registration Day — September 25 — is an excellent opportunity to update their voter registration or register to vote.

We thank you for your commitment to the REALTOR® Party, and we look forward to seeing you in Boston!

This is Only the Beginning…

bobGoldberg_sm.jpge_mendenhall.jpgWe are only a few weeks into legislative sessions and special and primary elections are occurring around the country. 2018 is going to be a busy year for REALTOR® advocacy. As NAR increases its influence in this uncertain legislative, regulatory and political environment, we’ll need all hands on deck.

Our first step was the reorganization of the former Community & Political Affairs and Government Affairs teams into a singular Advocacy Group. We’ve chosen Bill Malkasian to lead this new team as Chief Advocacy Officer, bringing greater synergy to the association’s federal, state, and local advocacy efforts. We are looking forward to Bill bringing his leadership and expertise as executive officer at the Wisconsin REALTOR® Association for nearly 37 years and overseeing political strategic planning for state and local advocacy outreach at NAR to his new role.

As you might remember we are coming off the heels of the last tax reform calls for action (CFAs), where more than 213,000 members took action. Our Advocacy Everywhere program, which allows state and local REALTOR® associations to better engage REALTORS® and consumers in CFAs, has hit the ground running!  We’ve had more than 10 CFAs at the state and local level since the beginning of the year, working on your behalf on issues such as sales tax on services, changes to Real Estate Broker License Law, rental restrictions, tax preemption bills that restricts voter rights and more.

This is only the beginning. With midterm elections ahead of us, we expect to see a lot of activity on all three levels of government. We’ll need your help. Be ready to take action at a moment’s notice by signing up for the REALTOR® Party Mobile Alerts, NAR’s advocacy texting platform. To sign up, simply text the word REALTORS to 30644 on your mobile phone.

We are looking forward to having an exciting year.
