Compliance Corner

State & Local Independent Expenditure Grants & Polling

Thanks to everyone who joined the January 28 All-GAD call with Mitchell Norton and me to discuss the State and Local Independent Expenditure (IE) Grant Program.

One key topic was polling, which can play an important role in determining whether to pursue an IE and, in some cases, in shaping messaging. As a reminder, poll results are considered a “thing of value.” Sharing them improperly could result in a reportable, or impermissible, in-kind contribution. Please check with us before sharing any poll results to avoid potential compliance issues.

If you missed the call and would like to learn more about independent expenditures, check out last month’s Compliance Corner or feel free to reach out.

From the Chair

GAD Nation,

If January was about setting intentions, February is where those intentions start showing up on the calendar.

Legislative sessions are underway. Election prep is no longer theoretical. RPAC planning is picking up speed. Member questions are getting more specific. At this point, it feels fair to say, “Okay, Houston, we’ve had a problem.” Everything is blowing up at the same time.

Many of you are already juggling bill tracking, candidate outreach, local ordinance issues, fundraising calendars, and member education efforts, often while trying to stay ahead of what is coming next. That is not easy work, and it deserves recognition.

One theme I want to emphasize as we head deeper into the year is preparedness. Early planning now, mapping advocacy priorities, flagging emerging issues, identifying allies, and building your internal timelines, pay dividends later when things move quickly. The more intentional we are, the less reactive we must be when pressure ramps up.

This is also a good moment to remind yourself that you do not have to do advocacy alone. NAR resources, staff, and GAD Nation exist for a reason, whether that means access to toolkits, shared examples, or simply a sounding board. The strength of the GAD community is the willingness to ask questions, share what works, and support others through challenges that come with our work.

If you have a template that works, share it. If you are stuck, ask the question! If you see trends at the state or local level, raise your hand. Chances are, someone else is dealing with the same issue or will be seeing that issue soon.

February is where momentum builds. You are doing important work, and you are not in isolation. Let’s keep leaning on each other and building toward the strongest REALTOR® advocacy year ever.
