Planning Your Independent Expenditure Campaign
With primary election season in full swing, it’s time to think about which candidates in your area are REALTOR® Champions, but the clock is ticking. Associations wanting to help state and local candidates with independent expenditure campaigns will need to have funds approved six weeks prior to their primary in order to have the full slate of campaign activities on the table, including direct mail, online ads, phone calls, and more. Message from the GAD Chair
Julia Parenteau
GAD Chair
Texas REALTORS®

cadyThomas2.jpgLess than one week to Super Tuesday! Get excited y’all, it’s about to get real. Maybe we’ll all be able to watch TV for a day without being bombarded by presidential candidates? A girl can hope anyway.

Last week, NAR held the first 2020 New GAD/AE Advocacy Orientation program at the Washington, D.C. mothership. Nearly 40 New GADs (and 5 AEs!) attended and got an overview of the REALTOR® Party in all its bipartisan, highly resourceful glory. Our new colleagues (pictured here) come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and the vast majority have a government affairs background, including legislative, campaign, and communications roles.

It was great to see the group get to know each other over the two days (perhaps forging the beginnings of lifelong friendships!), and dive into the many opportunities that NAR and GAD Nation provide for us to be successful in our advocacy efforts. I hope you will join me in welcoming them to the GAD family. It helps us all to build new relationships and hear fresh perspectives from people who have had different experiences than our own. Say hi to these folks when you see them (and ask them about their theater backgrounds…).

https://d3dkdvqff0zqx.cloudfront.net/groups/nar/images/0220_gadflygroup.jpgAnother good way to get to know your new counterparts is to sign up for the GAD Mentor program. New GADs are given the opportunity to be paired with experienced GADs (GAD Mentors) to help acclimate them to the organization and provide guidance on issues relevant to our job and industry. If you’re interested in participating, just send me an email.

Speaking of new people … if you haven’t heard the news yet, one of our own is heading to Washington. Christina Garavaglia, former GAD at the Santa Clara County Association of REALTORS®, has joined NAR as the Political Advocacy Manager. Congratulations, Chrissy!

Finally, it’s time to start thinking about your future. For any state GAD who is considering a run for 2020-2021 GAD Vice Chair, letters of interest are due to Chrissy Garavaglia by April 30, 2020. Per our Policies and Procedures, the Statement of Interest should include your qualifications, reasons for seeking the position, an indication of support from your association executive, and an affirmation of interest in fulfilling the responsibilities of the position. The names of verified candidates will be announced during the GAD meeting at the REALTORS® Legislative Meetings. The Vice Chair shall be elected at the GAD Institute by a majority vote of those members present.

Now, get out there and win all those primary elections. I can’t wait to hear about your successes when we meet again in May!

Please contact John Winston at 202-383-1235 as soon as possible to book your training. To host a training led by NAR staff and consultants, you must guarantee at least 20 attendees at your event. If you would like to lead a training or have a local consultant lead the training, NAR will have a revised set of slides and participant guides available to send to you by the end of February.

Texas REALTORS®

cadyThomas2.jpgIs it just me, or has 2020 come roaring in like a lion? Primary elections, association conferences and installations, the beginning of legislative sessions for many of you, city councils eager to get back to work after a long, lazy holiday season… it suddenly feels like a tidal wave of meetings, candidate requests, and twinkly evening events is taking over our lives.

In the midst of all of that, your GAD Advisory Group is hard at work planning for the 2020 GAD Institute, REALTORS® Legislative Meetings, and other professional development opportunities. As these sessions slowly take shape, I’m getting more and more excited about what each of those sessions will have to offer GAD Nation. From in-depth policy issues discussions to using your creepy powers of Big Data for good, this year’s conferences should have something for everyone.

Speaking of using your powers for good, be sure you’ve given yourself adequate planning time to tap into NAR’s Campaign Services if your association is engaging in spring primary elections. Need help with an independent expenditure? Contact Mitchell Norton. Need to make sure you have more voters show up for your preferred candidate? Consider starting with a Voter Registration campaign.

Working on something more nuanced or complex (of course you are!)? Your fellow GADs are here to help. Use the GAD Facebook group to get input and ideas on whatever you’re working on.
For all the advanced planners in the group, here’s some key dates to make sure you have blocked off:

February 20 – 21: New GAD/AE Orientation (Washington, DC)
Varied dates, primary elections!
May 11 – 16: REALTORS® Legislative Meetings (Washington, DC)
July 14 – 16: GAD Institute (Philadelphia, PA)

GAD New Year’s Wishes

May all your bills be undebated and fully supported (and may all your opponents’ bills falter),
May all your chosen candidates be personable and scandal-free,
May all your Councils be reasonable,
and may all your REALTOR® conferences go off without a hitch!

Message from the GAD Chair
Julia Parenteau
GAD Chair
Texas REALTORS®

cadyThomas2.jpgIn just one week, many of us will be convening in San Francisco for long days of committee meetings, member management, and – the best part – GAD connections. We’ve got a lot of great things planned for your time at the 2019 REALTORS® Conference, including presentations from your fellow GADs and NAR staff on the best ways to utilize REALTOR® Party programs and financial resources; special guests from Airbnb; state and local issues breakout discussions; and of course the GAD Reception, co-hosted by the San Francisco Association of REALTORS® and Airbnb.

The State and Local Issues Policy Committee has assigned GADs serving on that committee to six “Policy Modernization Work Groups.” These work groups have been tasked with reviewing NAR model policy positions related to:

  • Rental housing, general housing, and public education,
  • Spending limitations, tax limitations and internet tax policy,
  • Community service, community development, and member involvement,
  • Growth issues, land use, and impact fees,
  • Tax-exempt properties, property rights, and confiscation of real property, and
  • Transportation.

Proposed changes will be presented to the State and Local Issues Policy Committee at their meeting on Friday, November 8, 9:00 – 11:30 am PST at the Marriott Marquis Yerba Buena Salon 13. GADs are welcome to attend and provide comment. The Committee will consider these proposed changes for approval at their May 2020 meeting in Washington, D.C., so there will also be additional time to submit comment before the policies are finally adopted.

For those of you participating in the GAD Mentorship Program, San Francisco will be a great time to meet up with your partner for a quick in-person chat. Maintaining those relationships can be a lot easier once you’ve been able to put a face to the emailer.

If you’re not a long-time attendee of the REALTORS® Conference and have any questions about which sessions to prioritize or need other pointers for navigating the biggest REALTOR® event of the year, please don’t hesitate to ask. You can always reach me at the conference (or any other time) on my cell at (763) 232-9055. But before we get to San Francisco, many of us have elections to finish. If you’re in one of the 39 states that has some form of early and/or absentee voting, hopefully you’re already seeing lots of ballots roll in. While typically, off-year elections have lower turn-out than presidential and midterm election years, this November could be a good indicator of 2020 public engagement (aka: how mad is everyone, really?). I am very curious to hear how your local elections fare. Perhaps you’ll have a great Election Day success story to share when the GADs meet next Saturday!

Until then, Happy Halloween – I call dibs on the Fun Size Milky Ways.

Message from the GAD Chair
Julia Parenteau
GAD Chair
Texas REALTORS®

cadyThomas2.jpgSeptember: Kids are back to school, commuter traffic has gone from bad to worse, Halloween candy is in stores, and Election Day is just 40 days away. It’s truly the best time of year!

One of my top priorities as your Chair is to facilitate more opportunities for GADs to share their knowledge and experience to better serve the REALTOR® Party, and I’m excited that we’ll soon see NAR’s 2020 Committee appointments rolling into your inboxes. We’ll also be seeking other, less formal ways for GADs to contribute to the conversation at the local, state, and national levels. There are so many ways you can have an impact.

Speaking of service, I’d like to one again thank everyone who applied to serve on the GAD Advisory Group. This appointment process is one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done, given the significant talent you all bring to the table.

With that, I’m delighted to introduce the members of the 2019-2020 GAD Advisory Group:

Kelli Walker, Vice Chair (L) – New Orleans, LA
Matthew Leger, Immediate Past Chair (L) – Palm Beaches, FL
Samar Jha, 2020 Local Host – Philadelphia, PA
Sherri Martin, 2020 State Host – Pennsylvania
Liz Peetz, 2021 Host – Colorado
Andrew Blackburn (L) – Raleigh, NC
Josh Dix (L) – Charleston, SC
Lacey Everett (L) – Indianapolis, IN
Jamie Horbach (S) – Iowa
Mike Kelly (S) – New York
Theresa Kuhns (L) – Hughesville, MD
Nicole LaSlavic (S) – Arizona
James Litz (L) – Beverly Hills, CA
Brad Mock (S) – Georgia
Seth Palmer (S) – North Carolina
Bo Patten (L) – Long Island, NY
Taylor Shanaman (L) – Tacoma, WA
Danielle Cone Scoggins (S) – Florida
Clarke Wise (S) – Mississippi

The Advisory Group is already meeting via conference call, working on preliminary plans for the 2020 GAD Institute and several professional development opportunities that will take place between now and then.

Continuing the great work of Chairman Leger and his team, the Advisory Group will be exploring potential study groups that would research hot topics and present possible solutions at the 2020 Institute. But before that work can occur, we need to know what the hot topics are! What do you see as the next up-and-coming issue in your state or community that could benefit from in-depth analysis?

And before everyone shouts “short-term rentals!” all at once, don’t forget that this year’s presentations included short-term rentals and housing affordability. Please send your ideas to Kyle Lambert London, or to me at julia@texasrealtors.com.

If Election Day is 40 days away, that means we’ll be headed to the REALTORS® Conference & Expo in 41 days – I look forward to seeing many of you there!
