With the power of the REALTOR® Party’s Advocacy Everywhere program, the Anne Arundel County Association of REALTORS® led the successful opposition of a new budget provision that would raise connection fees for developers. A proliferation of emails to county council members made it clear that this was not a good look for lawmakers supposedly committed to creating more affordable housing.

REALTOR® Party News – February 2024
Making homeownership more accessible has been one of NAR’s top advocacy priorities for years, and REALTORS® are ensuring it’s top of mind for policymakers, too. Since NAR released its groundbreaking report on the housing shortage in 2021, REALTORS® have led the call for a once-in-a-generation response to solve this crisis.
Central Oregon REALTORS® Support Mixed Use Development and Affordable Housing
As the City Council of Bend, Ore., was considering creating an urban renewal area, the proposed Tax Incremental Financing was causing confusion among residents. To clarify that it didn’t mean new or higher taxes, and to show support for the project, the Central Oregon Association of REALTORS® launched a call for action.
Austin REALTORS® Help Neighboring Pflugerville Residents to Keep Property Taxes Low
Just north of Austin, the City Council of Pflugerville, Texas, was proposing to approve a property tax rate representing a 7% increase in revenue. The Austin Board of REALTORS®, recognizing that homeowners should not have to shoulder the additional tax burden during times of such economic stress and uncertainty, got the message through to Pflugerville’s elected officials with help from the Advocacy Everywhere program.
With Advocacy Everywhere, Spokane Association of REALTORS® Fends Off City Plan to Phase Out Natural Gas Usage
When the Spokane City Council presented a Sustainability Action Plan calling for extreme limitations on natural gas implementation, the REALTORS® reacted in force with multiple REALTOR® Party resources. It was a powerful Call for Action that discouraged the plan, and they are now focused on helping the city find reasonable solutions for increased energy efficiency.
With a Land Use Initiative and Advocacy Everywhere, New Orleans Metropolitan Association of Realtors® Minimize Impact of New Rental Regulations
Under pressure from a sensationalizing tenants’ rights organization, the New Orleans City Council proposed mandatory new fee-based registration and inspection regulations. The REALTORS® knew these would not help the affordable housing shortage; a Land Use Initiative analysis suggested that aspects of the proposal might even run afoul of current policy. Their opposition effectively de-clawed the new ordinances.
Correcting the Record on Rent Control
Rent control initiatives are sweeping the country, further limiting housing supply and exacerbating affordability issues. REALTORS® know sound rental policies are crucial to addressing America’s housing crisis.
