The City of Big Bear Lake is dependent on the tourism that drives its economy, so when the City Council considered capping the number of short-term rental permits, the REALTORS® went to bat – for property owners, and for the economic welfare of the region. A Fair Housing Grant from the REALTOR® Party helped the Bay East Association of REALTORS® bring the author of The Color of Law to a virtual discussion of his work. By opening the event to other key stakeholders and real estate organizations, they strengthened relationships all around.
Carroll County Association of REALTORS® and Maryland REALTORS® Successfully Oppose a Sharp Increase in Real Estate Recordation Tax
The Board of Commissioners in Carroll County, Maryland had proposed an increase in the Recordation Tax that would add $1,100 to the closing costs of the median home sale. The Carroll County Association couldn’t let that dampen the prospects of aspiring homebuyers who were already facing a difficult market, so with help from the Maryland REALTORS® and the REALTOR® Party, they convinced the board to take the rate hike out of the budget.

Charrette helps Austin REALTORS® Imagine Their Community
A Smart Growth Action Grant brought the impartiality the Austin Board of REALTORS® needed when they joined a developer and government officials to brainstorm solutions to the proposed Austin Oaks development that threatened to bring traffic congestion and tall buildings to the quiet community.
REALTORS® in Ottumwa, Iowa Help Bring Life Back to Their Downtown
With a Smart Growth Action Grant, money of their own, elbow grease and lots of enthusiasm, the South East Iowa Regional Board of REALTORS® partnered with the Better Block Foundation and other community leaders to host the Main Street Ottumwa Better Block Party, October 12-15. “Overnight, our quiet and struggling downtown commercial area became a place to come together to shop, to eat, to play games, to enjoy some music, and even dance!” The next steps are to transform what they learned from the weekend event into lasting improvements for Ottumwa’s downtown commercial area.
