Illinois REALTORS® created a statewide program called Real Property Alliance, leveraging NAR’s Consumer Advocacy Outreach Program’s Consumer Advocacy Database to drive Illinois consumers to www.realpropertyalliance.org. This program and website provides insight and analysis to Illinois property owners on important issues throughout the state and aligning property owners with REALTORS® in advocacy.
Missouri REALTORS® Form Coalition to Fight Sales Tax on Services
Missouri REALTORS® are no stranger to the threat of sales tax on services. With the help of a REALTOR® Party Issues Mobilization Grant and coalition support, the 20,000-member association is ambitiously attempting to amend the state constitution to ban a sales tax on services. By appealing to the general public, first to get the referendum on the ballot, and then for votes in its favor, Missouri REALTORS® are finding strength in numbers.
Mississippi becomes 4th State to Create Tax Benefits for First-Time Homebuyer Savings
The REALTOR® Party provided the Mississippi REALTORS® with in-depth economic research demonstrating how a First-Time Homebuyer Savings Account tax program would strengthen communities by increasing homeownership in the state. This, together with the strong coalition the REALTORS® had built, convinced legislators that the tax incentive was a good idea: it passed with a near-unanimous vote, and has been signed into law.

Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a safe and wonderful holiday season. Last year ended with the president signing the tax reform bill into law. While NAR remains concerned about the overall structure of the final bill, the advocacy of NAR members, as well as consumers, helped NAR to gain some important improvements throughout the legislative process. The final legislation will benefit many homeowners, homebuyers, real estate investors and NAR members as a result. One year to the day after Hurricane Harvey hit Harris County, Texas, citizens were called to the polls to vote on the region’s largest bond proposal ever: $2.5 billion for flood-control projects and flood mitigation. The measure passed with 85% support; the Houston REALTORS® helped get out the vote.
Greensboro REALTORS® Tackle Additions to City Zoning Code
When a fatal apartment fire triggered a knee-jerk reaction from the City Council to amend the municipal zoning code, the Greensboro Regional Association of REALTORS® used the REALTOR® Party’s Land Use Initiative to commission a thorough analysis of the changes. The report informed significant changes to the language, and the REALTORS® continue to work with the lawmakers to refine and improve it.
