South Dakota REALTOR® Tom Murphy is one of 535 Federal Political Coordinators (FPCs) assigned to educate a member of Congress on important issues facing the real estate industry. When his childhood friend, Senator Mike Rounds (SD) asked for help "cleaning up" a long list of legislative regulations that may be addressed by the new Congress, Murphy, with the assistance of NAR staff, answered the call.
REALTORS® Promote Affordable Housing for the Los Angeles Workforce
Summary:
The lack of affordable housing for Los Angeles County workers is driving businesses out of state. The Southland Regional Association of REALTORS® is responding to the crisis with REALTOR® Party-funded programs like its recent “Housing Our Workers Forum,” which brought together local stakeholders and officials to discuss solutions.
Minnesota REALTORS® Boost Advocacy with REALTOR® Party Mobile Alerts
Using targeted texting enabled by the REALTOR® Party Mobile Alerts program, Minnesota REALTORS® attracted a robust member presence to its recent Housing Day at the Capitol. The REALTORS® urged their legislators to support the Minnesota Homeownership Initiative, a proposed package of legislation that includes the First Time Homebuyers Savings Account Act—an incentive that is not only tax-free, but tax-deductible.
Cheyenne Board of REALTORS® Uses REALTOR® Party Mobile Alerts & Consumer Advocacy Outreach to Encourage Voting in Special Election
When a special election for a Penny Tax was called in Laramie County, the Cheyenne Board of REALTORS® rallied voters using REALTOR® Party Mobile Alerts and the Consumer Advocacy Outreach Program. By approving seven of the nine ballot propositions, citizens created a funding mechanism for two new fire stations, an event center and multiple infrastructure and safety upgrades.
Texas REALTORS® Bring Clarity to Voting Process
Ballots in Texas were mired in a confusing, unregulated free-for-all where proposition names were concerned. There was no systematic order, and sometimes duplicate proposition names appeared on a single ballot. But with help from the Texas REALTORS® and the REALTOR® Party, the enactment of a new Election Transparency law made all clear.
Beverly Hills/Greater Los Angeles Association REALTORS
To prevent an extreme proposition that would curtail development in Los Angeles, the REALTORS® of Beverly Hills/Greater Los Angeles used the power of the REALTOR® Party's Land Use Initiative and Issues Mobilization Grant programs. These resources and an unlikely partnership helped defeat the measure and secure housing opportunities across the city.
Ohio REALTORS® Achieve Double Legislative Victory on the Tax Front
Because an Ohio law required businesses and individuals to file taxes in every jurisdiction where they'd earned income, most Ohio REALTORS® faced a costly and time consuming administrative burden at tax time. But all that is about to change thanks to an Issues Mobilization Grant, which helped secure a streamlined income tax filing system, and defeat a threatened tax on professional services.
Data from Traverse REALTORS® Proves Invaluable to Downtown Development Planning for Affordable Housing
In Traverse City, Michigan’s desirable downtown neighborhoods, affordable housing is scarce, and the land base is already largely built. With a Smart Growth Action Grant, the Traverse Area Association of REALTORS® engaged a consulting firm to create a 3D economic model demonstrating the potential tax revenue from various development configurations to assist developers and the City Commission in making good decisions for the community.
New Hampshire REALTORS® Envision Smart Growth for White Mountains
The White Mountains of New Hampshire are a popular tourist region, but affordable housing for would-be service industry staff is not meeting demand. The 150-member White Mountain Board of REALTORS® used a Smart Growth Action Grant to explore possible zoning changes that would permit higher density development—and more affordable housing.
