For five years, the Utah Association of REALTORS® has been working with the governor’s office and the state legislature to engineer solutions to the state’s dire shortage of affordable housing. The recent session saw the creation of some game-changing approaches to funding, among other advances and reforms, which the state REALTORS® supported with their first big social media buy. An Issues Mobilization Grant helped make it possible.

East Tennessee Association of REALTORS® Taps Land Use Initiative Program to Defeat Proposed Down-zoning in Knoxville
When an unprecedented and arbitrary attempt to over-rule a recently adopted zoning determination was made by a Knoxville County Council member, the East Tennessee Association of REALTORS® turned to Robinson & Cole, LLC for expert analysis of the proposal. The law firm, retained by the REALTOR® Party to review zoning documents for state and local REALTOR® associations, returned a report that formed the basis of the REALTORS®’ successful opposition.
North Bay Association of REALTORS® Defeats Real Property Transfer Tax
When the City of St. Helena, California was facing budget challenges last June, the City Council attempted to ‘solve’ its shortfall by increasing the real property transfer tax. In response, the North Bay Association of REALTORS® launched an energetic campaign to convince the voters to decline the tax increase, as well as a problematic transition to charter city status.
Oregon REALTORS® Rally Public Support for Legislation Lowering Barriers to Condominium Construction
On the heels of significant legislative advances for housing in recent sessions, Oregon REALTORS® kept up the momentum by backing a law that would bring the state statute of limitations on construction defect liability closer in-line with that of its western peers. Their latest legislative success will reduce barriers to building affordable condominiums and expand access to homeownership to more Oregon residents. Their effort got a big boost from the REALTOR® Party’s Advocacy Everywhere program.

Making homeownership more accessible has been one of NAR’s top advocacy priorities for years, and REALTORS® are ensuring it’s top of mind for policymakers, too.
Texoma Board of REALTORS® Sparks a Main Street Comeback with Better Block Project
Using a Smart Growth Grant from the REALTOR® Party, the Texoma Board of REALTORS® broke through the planning fatigue that was keeping the town of Durant from making progress in its revitalization efforts. The temporary Better Block installation spurred the city to restripe crosswalks, repair water and electricity in planting areas and install new lighting. A temporary parking configuration designed to enhance walkability and community gathering was so successful, the city has welcomed it as a permanent improvement.
