These last few months have redefined the terms home and community. Our homes aren’t just homes anymore, and our communities have become our life line during these challenging times. Unfortunately, some of our communities have been damaged outside of the peaceful racial equity demonstrations. We are committed to honoring homeownership and leading the way on policies that address racial injustice and that build safe and inclusive communities where people of color feel safe to pursue the American Dream. With a new implicit bias training curriculum, #CreatingHome campaign, and grant for REALTOR® associations, this is a small part of building a future that begins with equal access to housing and opportunity for all.

Percent of LGBTQ adults what are homeowners, compared with nearly 65% of heterosexuals. The lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community is less likely to be homeowners according to a newly released report from the National Association of Gay & Lesbian Real Estate Professionals and Freddie Mac. While gaining more acceptance on some legal fronts, members of the LGBTQ community continue to report high levels of fear over discrimination in housing.

Drawing upon the latest evidence-based research, the Institute explains how our brains’ association of stereotypes with particular groups can cause us to treat those who are different from us unfairly, despite our best efforts. Perception then applies these concepts to the everyday work of REALTORS®, and offers strategies to override bias in order to convey respect, ensure fairness, and improve business relationships.
