To all of our veterans, we first and foremost thank you for your service.
Happy Veterans Day from NAR!
The bipartisan infrastructure bill, passed by Congress last week, includes a historic $65 billion investment in broadband. Our country has a dire need for broadband expansion, and NAR has long championed this cause. This new funding will ensure all communities have affordable access to a world-class communications infrastructure.
On October 1, FEMA began implementing its new flood insurance pricing methodology – Risk Rating 2.0: Equity in Action – following nearly a decade of work with NAR and other stakeholders to revamp the National Flood Insurance Program. This system will produce more accurate, equitable, and science-based rates that better reflect the specific flood risk of each individual home.
Three years ago, NAR and FEMA signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to collaborate and contribute to public awareness about flood resiliency and insurance. The NFIP’s new Risk Rating 2.0 system is one example of this collaboration. FEMA Senior Executive David Maurstad joined the NAR Insurance Committee in San Diego today to discuss our shared commitment to ensuring REALTORS® and their clients are informed and prepared.
The NAR State and Local Independent Expenditure Program provides funds that state and local associations can use to support REALTOR® champions for political office. This year, the program has enabled participation in 203 campaigns, a record for a post-presidential off-year election. 113 of those campaigns were decided on Election Day – November 2 – with a 65 percent win rate.
NAR joined The Memorial Foundation in late October to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C. Along with attending the anniversary dinner, NAR leaders joined U.S. President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and other dignitaries for a ceremony at the memorial on the National Mall. NAR was one of the first organizations to support the memorial’s construction, donating $1 million to the project.
The REALTOR® Party At Work
Highlighted here are a few of the many REALTOR® Party success stories across the nation. These and others are cataloged in the Success Stories section on REALTORParty.realtor.
The Bridge Association of REALTORS® knew proposed legislation giving tenants in Berkeley, Calif., the rights of first offer and first refusal when a landlord seeks to sell a rental property would be devastating – not only to private property rights and the local housing market, but as the likely catalyst of a chain reaction throughout the state and across the nation. They also understood that it would disproportionately harm people of color. Taking no chances, the association used several REALTOR® Party resources to assess the risks and prevent its passage.
Fredericksburg Area Association of REALTORS® Uses Smart Growth Poll to Create Informed Regional Growth and Housing Action Plan
Fifty miles south of the nation’s capital, Fredericksburg, Va., is feeling the crunch of insufficient affordable housing. Using Smart Growth resources from the REALTOR® Party, the Fredericksburg Area Association of REALTORS® has established itself as the go-to source for data, research, and policy guidance as the region grapples with how to manage the development of workforce and entry-level housing with sensitivity to the surrounding countryside.
There were plenty of reasons that the proposed creation of a rental registry was bad news for Glendale, Calif., the third largest city in L.A. County. It was not only unnecessary, but it was also going to be costly and cumbersome. Most alarming, it would expose personal data to public scrutiny. The Glendale Association of REALTORS® understood these threats and the importance of defeating the measure – and, using multiple REALTOR® Party resources, they did.
Resources & Opportunities
The latest issue of On Common Ground explores how government and the private sector are responding to the housing shortage, from zoning modifications to 3D-printed houses. An online version is available on the OCG app (Apple) (Google Play) and at NAR.realtor. More than 35,000 copies will be distributed to state and local associations and elected officials. Are you on the list? If not, contact Catherine Mesick.
Legislative and regulatory proposals that may harm property rights often arise quickly and require expert analysis. The Land Use Initiative will analyze and provide talking points for state and local REALTOR associations on proposed planning and zoning related measures that impact the transfer of real property. Review measures submitted by associations during Q3 2021 and search keyword, issue, date, and state to read measures submitted by associations since 1999.
Use the Placemaking Guide for REALTOR® Associations to help your association spearhead a new pocket park, community garden, parklet, dog park, or downtown gathering spot that creates a distinctive sense of place and enhances your community’s walkability.
